Julie White, Executive Director

Julie has dedicated her professional career to international development and humanitarian work, beginning as a volunteer palliative care support worker for adults dying of AIDS at the London John Gordon Home. It was in caring for the dying and witnessing their struggle that the direction of her career was set.
Julie has lived and worked in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Colombia, and Venezuela, researching the high risk factors which make women and children vulnerable to contracting HIV for various non-profit and government organizations. It was here that Julie saw the devastating effects of AIDS on the economy, the social structures of communities, but mostly on families and especially, children.
In 2003 Julie became Executive Director of AIDS Action Perth, a non-profit AIDS service organization in Ontario, where she developed and implemented programs on prevention and education, client services, as well as a needle exchange. She also created Safespace, a drop-in centre for at-risk rural gay youth.
Julie holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Women's Studies from Huron University College, University of Western Ontario.
As a volunteer, Julie serves on the Board of Directors of Optimism Place, a shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence. In 2006, Julie was named Women of the Year in the Women in Anti-Violence division, a prestigious award presented on behalf of the Province of Ontario for her commitment and contributions to her community.
